While Highway One is open between Big Sur and Carmel, the one lane 100 foot area at the slide site has necessitated an earlier start for event buses by 15 minutes (except for the 10.6-Milers). Also, the 21-Miler will start at 6:45 rather than 6:30 so that the first convoy can clear the slide area prior to the first runners arriving there. |

For 2012 we will be replacing the traditional organic cotton shirts with a technical fabric shirt for our 10.6 and 9-Miler participants. |

The Big Sur Marathon has received numerous accolades and awards over the past 26 years. Among top honors, the marathon has been named:
- One of the country's top three marathons (along with New York and Boston) by the editors of Runner's World magazine, December 2009
- The "Best Destination Marathon" by the readers of Runner's World magazine, January 2010 and 2011, and twice named the "Best Destination Marathon in North America" by the Ultimate Guide to Marathons.
- The only U.S. based race incldued in "Ten Races to Do Before You Die" by Runner's World United Kingdom, March 2010 and by Runner's World Australia, March 2010
- "Most Scenic Marathon," Sunday Times, London, April 2010
- America's Outstanding Runner Friendly Community (Monterey Peninsula) by the RRCA (Road Runner's Club of America), April 2011
