Fashion and Function Run Together in Marathon T- Shirts

(Carmel, California)  Every race boasts a new t-shirt for all registrants but not all can boast of its commitment to the environment as well as the Big Sur International Marathon.  For the second year in a row, the Big Sur Marathon is the first race in North America to distribute 100% organic cotton to the 10,000 athletes entered in the five Marathon-related events.    Participants will receive these t-shirts made possible through the generous sponsorships of Earthbound Farm, Patagonia and San Francisco graphic designer, Geoffrey Dowd.

Beneficial T's, a division of outdoor clothing designer Patagonia Inc, produces the all-organic cotton shirts.  "By supporting the Big Sur Marathon with organic cotton T-shirts, we're eliminating 4,000 pounds of synthetic chemicals that would have been used to produce conventional cotton shirts," said Lu Setnicka, Patagonia's Director of Public Affairs.  "We join the Marathon and Earthbound Farms in supporting this worthwhile endeavor for the running community and the environment."

Earthbound Farm has been a sponsor of the Marathon for several years, and initiated the concept of organic T-Shirts for the Marathon as part of the company's commitment to make the organic choice available.  "It is important that people realize the health of the environment.  We are thrilled that we were able to help forge the organic partnership with Patagonia and the Marathon," said Myra Goodman, co-founder of Earthbound Farm.

The color and composition of rolling hills depict the beauty and serenity of the course.  Geoffrey Dowd is a San Francisco graphic designer who focuses on interactive digital media but whose first love is illustration and its role in graphic design.  "I am proud to be working with the Big Sur International Marathon on the 2002 T-shirt design.  It is a simple illustration distilled down to the essential elements of the Big Sur Marathon experience:  rolling mountains dramatically meeting ocean and sky, the open road and the fleeting of running feet."   An avid runner as well, this year will be Dowd's third consecutive marathon.

"This is a really exciting milestone for us," said Race Director, Wally Kastner.  "Runners consistently tell us that they come to Big Sur to enjoy the peaceful serenity of running along our pristine coastline.  The fact that we can now feature organic cotton T-shirts for participants is a follow-through on the commitment we have made to tread lightly on the earth while staging a world class road race," he continued.

The 17th annual presentation of the Big Sur International Marathon is set for Sunday, April 28 at 7:00 am.  All proceeds from the event will be distributed to nonprofit organizations throughout Monterey County.  Over the past 16 years, over $900,000 has been distributed to local charities.  For more information, please visit www.bsim.org, www.ebfarms.com , www.beneficialts.com and www.geoffdowd.com.
